A 24-year-old woman is the latest “collateral casualty” of the war between drug-trafficking gangs in Marseille, as she was struck by a bullet while inside her home and doctors pronounced her clinically dead.

Since the beginning of the year, around 40 people have died in violent incidents linked to the control of the drug trade in France’s second-largest city. This situation is described as a “blood bath” by the authorities.

The unfortunate woman, who lived with her mother on the 3rd floor of an apartment building in a neighborhood near which it is “customary” for groups of young people to gather in the evenings. At this point it is known that drugs are trafficked, said the prosecutor of Marseilles. 23 Kalashnikov casings were found in the area. The 24-year-old “looks like it was a collateral damage,” she added.

The victim was taken to a hospital on Sunday night.

Stray bullets also hit the apartments of two elderly women, ages 79 and 86, who were not injured, authorities said.

At least two other collateral casualties have been recorded in Marseille this year: a 43-year-old woman and a 63-year-old man.

The war for control of the drug trade in Marseille has taken the form of a vendetta between two rival organizations, Yoda and DZ Mafia. In mid-August, the police reported that since the beginning of the year, 740 weapons and 12 million euros were seized in the wider region, while 1,144 traffickers were arrested.
