Russian President Vladimir Putin greeted and shook North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s hand for 40 seconds at the Vastochni Cosmodromehis country’s most modern missile launch facility.

“I am glad to see you”, said the president of the Russian Federation. “This is our new spaceport.”

Through a translator, the North Korean leader thanked him for the invitation and for his warm welcome.

Mr. Putin easked whether Moscow will help Pyongyang to build satellites he said “that’s why we came to the Vastochni cosmodrome”, adding that “we will discuss everything”.

Governments and analysts in the West had discounted in recent days that Mr Kim’s trip to the Russian Far East would focus on conclusion of bilateral agreements in the field of military armaments.

Mr. Putin reportedly wants ammunition, especially artillery, and weapons for use in the war in Ukraine. Mr. Kim, for his part, reportedly wants Russian technology, particularly in satellites and submarines.

This is Mr Kim’s second visit to Russia since he took power in 2012.
