The demonstration was held on the occasion of the 18th anniversary of the withdrawal of the Israeli army from the Gaza Strip and the 30th anniversary of the Oslo Accords.
Five Palestinians were killed and 19 others injured in an explosion that occurred yesterday during a demonstration near the Gaza wall, the Hamas-controlled health ministry said.
A video from a drone, in which the moment of the explosion is recorded, was released by the Israeli army.
“In the last few hours, hundreds of rioters took part in an episodic demonstration near the security wall in the northern part of the Gaza Strip,” the Israeli military said in a statement. According to her, Palestinians tried to detonate an improvised explosive device next to the wall, which exploded prematurely, killing some of them.
The demonstration was held on the occasion of the 18th anniversary of the withdrawal of the Israeli army from the Gaza Strip and the 30th anniversary of the Oslo Accords.
About 2.3 million Palestinians crowd the Gaza Strip, a tiny coastal enclave plagued by poverty and unemployment. Israel imposed a strict blockade of Gaza after Hamas took power in the enclave in 2007.
Since the beginning of the year, at least 232 Palestinians, 32 Israelis, a Ukrainian woman and an Italian have been killed in violent incidents linked to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, according to an AFP tally based on official statements by Israeli and Palestinian authorities.
