Hundreds of flights were canceled by US companies today, warning of expected problems over the weekend due to the upcoming wave of bad weather that, accompanied by strong winds and heavy snowfall, will hit the northeastern and mid-Atlantic states.
The National Weather Service has issued a warning that bad weather will cause snowstorms and make travel “almost impossible”.
American Airlines estimates that the wave of bad weather will have a “significant” impact on its flights in the northeastern part of the country and especially at Boston Logan International Airport. The Texas-based carrier has so far canceled 50 flights to avoid last minute problems at the airport. At the same time, it allows affected passengers to make reservations at no extra charge.
New York-based Jet Blue announced the cancellation of about 500 flights by Sunday. United Airlines canceled 10% of its scheduled flights on Saturday. For its part, Delta Airlines said it expects the bad weather to affect its flights over the weekend.
In all, more than 2,200 flights on Saturday have been canceled, according to FlightAware.
The bad weather is adding to the challenges facing the aviation industry, which is trying to recover from the turmoil caused by the Omicron variant of the coronavirus. The increase in infections among workers has left air carriers understaffed, forcing them to cancel flights.
Southwest Airlines reports that about 5,000 employees (or 10% of its workforce) became infected with the virus in the first three weeks of January. The company has canceled more than 5,600 flights this month, which is estimated at a loss of $ 50 million in revenue.
