Mistakes made in handling tragedy – Tchin Tchin wine bar owner admits to throwing away some sardines from batch because ‘they didn’t smell good’
New evidence of the death of a 32-year-old Greek woman from botulism in Paris last Thursday – after eating sardines in a restaurant in Bordeaux – has been brought to light by French media.
For example, according to the website sudouest.fr, the young woman – who was on holiday in Bordeaux with her husband, who is also hospitalized with botulism – initially visited a local hospital emergency room late Friday nightwith inability to swallow and hoarseness.
There doctors diagnosed “a form of laryngitis” and she was told she could leave the hospital, without any suspicion or indication of botulism.
The couple returned to Paris on Saturday and Sunday, as her symptoms persisted she again went to urgentthis time at Bégin Hospital in Paris.
Doctors kept her under observation until late Monday morning.
Meanwhile, other cases of botulism appeared in Bordeaux – all customers of the same restaurant Tchin Tchin Wine Bar – and the regional health authority (ARS) of New Aquitaine had been informed but the doctors in Paris did not know this and discharged her.
The 32-year-old Greek woman, whose identity has not been released, died the next day at her home.
Her husband is in the emergency room while at least 11 other people – most of them foreigners – are being treated, according to the French health authorities.
Of these, 7 people are in serious condition, in intensive care.
All of them had eaten at the restaurant “Tchin Tchin Wine Bar”, between September 4 and 10, sardines that had been stored by the owner of the restaurant in jars.
The restaurant was sealed for inspection, and analyzes showed a “lack of control of the preservation process”
In fact, according to Le Parisien, the owner of the Tchin Tchin wine bar, admitted that he threw away some sardines from the batch because they “didn’t smell good”.
“I confess that I had a batch of sardines and when I opened them I had to throw away some that had a strong smell. The rest looked good to be served to customers. I’m devastated,” he said.
