The Commission decided today not to extend the ban on the import of Ukrainian agricultural products into the EU, as the ban was due to expire today
The European Commission decided today not to extend the ban on the import of Ukrainian agricultural products into the EU; as the ban was due to expire at midnight today.
Sharp increases in Ukrainian grain imports into and through the European Union have sparked protests from farmers in member states and concerns about market distortions in some eastern EU countries, prompting governments to unilaterally embargo the items.
In April, Brussels allowed five member states — Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia — to ban trade in Ukrainian wheat, maize, rapeseed and sunflower seeds on their territory, provided they do not impede their transit to other countries.
“The Commission concluded that thanks to the work of the Coordination Platform and the temporary measures introduced on 2 May 2023, market distortions in the five Member States bordering Ukraine no longer exist,” the European Commission said in its statement.
However, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia have announced in the past days that they will unilaterally extend these bans, regardless of the Commission’s decision. Only Bulgaria decided not to extend the ban.
