His 1934 oil painting Pablo Picasso, “Femme à la montre” it is expected to sell for up to $120 million at an auction held this fall.

“Femme à la montre” is inspired by Picasso’s longtime muse, Marie-Thérèse Walter, a French model with whom he had a relationship from 1927 to 1935. At the time, Picasso was still married to his first wife, Olga Khokhlova, a Russian-Ukrainian dancer.

According to the auction house, the portrait is one of the works created during the most productive years of the Spanish artist’s career and was the subject of an exhibition organized at the Musée Picasso in Paris and the Tate Modern in London in 2018.

“Picasso’s “Femme à la Montre” is a masterpiece in every way,” said Julian Dawes, head of Impressionist and Modern Art at Sotheby’s Americas.

Painted in 1932, the artwork exemplifies a “sense of liberation from keeping its relationship secret that seems to have spilled over into this exquisite canvas,” he said, noting that the artist pays attention to every little detail, creating a composition that is so complex. as well as deeply harmonious.

Sotheby’s New York is organizing the auction in which the collection of art collector Emily Fischer Landau will be sold, which includes, in addition to the Picasso painting, the works “Pink Tulip” (1926) by Georgia O’Keeffe and “Triumph Over Mastery II’ (1987) by Mark Tansey.
