North Macedonia has banned the head of the Metohius of the Russian Orthodox Church in Sofia, Archimandrite Vasian Zmeev, from entering the country, Skopje media reported, according to which the Russian cleric had been coordinating all policies of the neighboring country’s Orthodox Church for the past year. , regarding its ecclesiastical diplomacy, which led to a state of complete stagnation in its relations with the Ecumenical Patriarchate for the full recognition of its autocephaly.

The President of North Macedonia, Stevo Pendarovski, in a recent interview revealed that, according to information from friendly countries, some metropolitans of the Archdiocese of Ahrid are cooperating with the Russian security services.

It is noted that in May 2022 the Ecumenical Patriarchate recognized and accepted into ecclesiastical communion the Archdiocese of Ahrida under the condition of avoiding any reference to the term “Macedonia” and its derivatives, without, however, this decision implying the granting of Autocephaly to this church.

It is recalled that just yesterday, Saturday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of North Macedonia announced the expulsion of three Russian diplomats, who are accused of violating diplomatic rules, increasing to 14 the number of staff members of the Russian embassy in Skopje who have been expelled since the beginning of the of Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
