Residents of England over the age of 65 are invited from today to make an appointment for a booster dose of the vaccine against the coronavirus.

The new COVID-19 booster vaccination program began last week for nursing home and homebound residents. The start was rushed a month earlier than planned due to the appearance of the new variant BA.2.86. in Britain.

The variant seems to have started to spread more rapidly among the population, as evidenced by increased hospitalizations of coronavirus carriers.

Specifically, now 4.6 carriers per 100,000 people who are diagnosed positive need hospitalization, the highest ratio in about five months.

However, this ratio is clearly lower than last winter’s 11.8 hospitalizations per 100,000, while there are also very few cases requiring hospitalization in an intensive care unit.

The majority of hospitalizations concern patients aged 75 and over.
