THE Poland suggested today the new European sanctions against Russia for its invasion of Ukraine to include a ban on the sale of Russian diamonds and liquefied natural gas (LPG) while also calling for sanctions against Belarus to be aligned with Moscow’s.

In the Warsaw proposal, which came to the knowledge of the Reuters agency, it is requested to ban the import of Russian diamonds and to impose sanctions on the Russian company Alrosa. From the sale of diamonds, Russia had an income of 4.5 billion dollars in 2021.

“Alrosa has been supporting Russian military forces and the war in Ukraine, directly and indirectly, for many years,” the document states.

The European Commission has already imposed 11 sets of sanctions on Russia following its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Poland is now calling for a ban on the import of information and communications technology (TPE) originating from Russian entities, including software and cyber security services. At the same time, the EU should stop buying Russian LPG to preserve the integrity and transparency of the market and prevent distortion of competition.
