Giorgia Meloni said the huge number of migrants arriving in Lampedusa has put Italy under incredible pressure
Italy’s migrant crisis was addressed by the Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, at the UN General Assembly, declaring that she will not allow her country to become “Europe’s refugee camp”, the Guardian reports.
In particular, Georgia Meloni said that the huge number of migrants who arrived in Lampedusa, have “caused Italy incredible pressure”.
Lampedusa has once again become Europe’s migration flashpoint after more than 11,000 people arrived last week, while almost another 500 people were rescued from an NGO ship and taken to Brindisi in Puglia on Tuesday, bringing the number of migrants disembarked in Italy so far this year to over 127,000, more than double that of the same period in 2022.
Meloni led a £105m deal signed in July between the EU and Tunisia, the country of departure for the vast majority of migrants, to curb irregular migration. However, the number of people crossing into Italy has increased by almost 70% since the agreement was signed.
