Zelanski’s speech in front of many empty chairs at the UN caused problems – “Fatigue” in the international community observes the German media
Polite applause at Zelensky’s speech in front of many empty chairs of the HE plenary. What happens; Has the international community gotten used to the idea of war in Ukraine? Is international solidarity collapsing?
Her commentator Handelsblatt he observes the spread of a collective acceptance of horror, as he calls it.
“Thanks to Joe Biden and Olaf Scholz, Ukraine’s moral support has not completely faded into the background at the moment,” he points out. However, the German columnist argues that the influence of the Atlantic alliance on Ukraine has reached its limits.
“A ceasefire seems distant, the US and Germany have not yet been able to agree on the provision of missiles. Both countries are struggling with their own problems. 80-year-old Biden is a president who is showing his age (…) And Germany has realized in a year full of negative economic data, that the country of craftsmen and inventors is anything but well prepared for the future,” he emphasizes.
But so did her commentator Welt he sees as a danger that now the world is getting used to war. “As cynical as it sounds, war is starting to lose its attention-grabbing momentum,” he notes.
“People outside of Ukraine are tired of looking worried. The narrative of the threat has become part of everyday life. The war president is no longer exciting. But for the people of Ukraine the war is real. And to ignore the voices (of help) or out of habit to propose a compromise at the expense of the freedom of others is the worst solution.”
His columnist Spiegel expresses his general disappointment that even the big goals of the UN to fight poverty and protect the climate are not progressing: “Only Chancellor Scholz believes that in 2023 he could initiate change (…) but this is rather confusing” believes the German journalist .
“Not only because it does not have quick reflexes for the climate, but …. also because the global community is far from achieving the goals it has set, either for the climate or for the fight against poverty” he concludes.
