Armenia accuses Azerbaijan of “ethnic cleansing and mass atrocities” in Nagorno-Karabakh. “The intensity and brutality of (Azerbaijan’s) attack makes it clear that it was aimed at finalizing the ethnic cleansing of the Armenian population in Nagorno-Karabakh,” Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan said during an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council in New York.
Mirzoyan stressed that, so far, more than 200 people have been killed and another 400 injured, including civilians and especially women and children. More than 10,000 people have been forcibly displaced, he added. Among them are women, children and the elderly, who were forced to live in the countryside without food.

The UN Security Council had not responded in an appropriate manner, the head of Armenian diplomacy emphasized. He argued that since there is now “clear and irrefutable evidence… of a policy of ethnic cleansing and mass atrocities, the UN Security Council must act.”
On Tuesday morning, Azerbaijan launched a military operation in Nagorno-Karabakh to bring the disputed enclave under its full control. On Wednesday, Armenian separatists surrendered.
