The number of deaths in the UK due to high temperatures has risen sharply over the past three decades, according to data from the Office of National Statistics.

Specifically a doubling of deaths linked to temperatures of at least 29 degrees Celsius between 1990 and 2022.

In three-year averages, in 2022 there were 2,866 heat-related deathswhile the corresponding tally in 1990 was 1,417 deathsthat is an increase of 102%.

The highest heat-related mortality is observed in the period 2018-2022 and mainly in London and the wider south-east of England.

On the hottest days of 2022, when the highest temperature on record in the country was recorded at 40.3 degrees Celsius in mid-July, there were 4,507 weather-related deaths.

At the opposite extreme, cold-related deaths in 2022 were numerically the second fewest ever recorded in one year, at 1,214.
