A day of national mourning was declared today in Kosovo for the death of the police sergeant who was killed early Sunday in a clash with armed Serbs in the village of Bansko.

Kosovo’s general prosecutor’s office announced that another man’s body was found in a forest 1.5 kilometers away from the scene of the clash.

Prosecutor Naim Abazi confirmed that he was a member of the group of Serb gunmen who clashed with the police and said that a jeep loaded with weapons was nearby. Thus, the number of Serbs killed during yesterday’s armed conflicts reaches four. Analysts in Kosovo as well as in Serbia estimate that the dead will be more since of the approximately 30 armed Serbs who were buried in the Monastery of Saint Stephen, the fate of only six is ​​known – four who were killed and two who were captured.

Among those arrested are four people who are considered collaborators of the perpetrators.

All those arrested have been remanded in custody and are accused of attempting to overthrow the constitutional order, a threat to the security of the state, while one faces the charge of participating in a terrorist act. The village of Bansko in northern Kosovo remains cordoned off by heavy police forces as they search for weapons. As announced, large quantities of munitions and modern military weapons were found in the vehicles used by the perpetrators. Searches are also being conducted in other areas of northern Kosovo where there are reports of cached weapons.
