British Foreign Secretary: ‘Unlikely’ to send British troops to fight in Ukraine

The image of Ukraine on the border with Russia is becoming “increasingly worrying,” British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said today.

“I continue to urge Russia to engage in negotiations and to avoid a reckless and catastrophic invasion,” Johnson wrote on Twitter.

Earlier, speaking to the BBC, Foreign Minister Liz Tras said it was “very likely” that Russia was considering invading Ukraine. However, when asked if there was a scenario in which British troops would be sent to fight in Ukraine, he replied: “This is very unlikely. “The issue is to ensure that the Ukrainian forces have all the support we can give them.”

Johnson will propose to NATO to double the number of British troops of about 1,150 troops currently stationed in Eastern Europe. He also plans to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin to urge him to “back off” and to visit Ukraine in the coming days.

London plans to introduce a new bill later this week, possibly tomorrow, to extend the type of sanctions it could impose on Russia, Tra said. “What allows us to do this bill is to hit a much wider variety of targets. “So that no one thinks he will have immunity from sanctions,” he said in another interview with Sky News. “Any company interested in the Kremlin and the Russian regime could be targeted, so the’s oligarchs (Russian President Vladimir Putin), the Russian companies that support the Russian state, will have nowhere to hide,” he added.

– Johnson’s future ‘guaranteed’

Boris Johnson’s future as British Prime Minister is secure, said Liz Trass, who is considered one of his possible successors to the Conservative leadership and government.

Johnson is facing the most serious threat to his position, on the occasion of the parties he allegedly organized at his official residence on Downing Street and in his office, in the middle of the pandemic, when gatherings were banned. Some of these rallies are being investigated by the police but he has so far ignored the calls to resign.

Asked if Johnson should resign if it turns out he lied to parliament, Trash said: “I will not answer hypothetical questions. “The future of the prime minister is guaranteed.”
