A reference to plans to install undersea cables that would connect Egypt to Europe via the Mediterranean Sea and carry energy from solar farms and wind farms in northern Africa to the United Kingdom, reports the Daily Telegraph.
Details of the plan will reportedly be presented at a conference of energy data analytics firm Rystad in London (27/9).
Increased demand for renewable energy from Europe is driving the development of infrastructure such as solar farms in the Egyptian desert and wind farms near the Suez Canal, which in total are expected to generate 10 gigawatts of energy, roughly equivalent to that produced by ten plants in United Kingdom.
This energy will reach Europe with a 965 km long cable that will end in Attica.
According to a Rystad official, about 1/3 of the transferred energy will be used in Greece and the rest will be exported to Europe.
“The £3.7 billion project is being developed by the Kopelouzou Group, a Greek company, in partnership with Infinity, an Egyptian company that has developed solar farms in various wasteland areas,” the report added.
It is also noted that the construction of four cables from Morocco directly to the United Kingdom is being planned at the same time.
