The European Union has returned to a migration crisis, as reported by the EPP president and head of the EPP’s KO in the European Parliament, Manfred Weber, speaking to a group of journalists a day before the Home Affairs Council, which will take place in Brussels.

“Bearing in mind that the people who arrive in Lampedusa and Italy are most likely not to stay in Italy, it is clear that this is a European challenge and a European response must be found”, noted Mr Weber, adding that “the EPP it is the party of balance, of finding a reasonable balance”.

“I am proud because as Europeans we host so many refugees than ever before in our history. Three million Ukrainians on European soil, so no one can say that we are building walls and not letting people in. The opposite happens. We are ready to help”, emphasized the president of the EPP, pointing out at the same time that traffickers must be fought and their business stopped.

“Kyriakos Mitsotakis is able to help all Europeans”

Mr. Weber, when asked about the need for additional funding and the case of Greece, specifically referred to the Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, and the meeting he had in New York with the Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, stressing, among other things, that “Kyriakos is able to help all Europeans in this light, but again we need a European solution, we cannot say that it is a Greek problem.” In addition, he noted that “we must be clear about the external borders. We will not let Erdogan or others use immigrants as a political tool. There Europe must be clear, strong and strict. If it’s about more funding, solidarity, if the needs are there, then we have to do it.”

Finally, Mr. Weber said that when citizens ask him if the immigration problem can be solved, he tells them: “I want to be honest. As a politician no one will solve the problem, bearing in mind that in Africa there is a completely different economic situation than in Europe. When we have such a different situation, we can’t solve it but we can bring back control. This is what we can do. Europe can do it.”
