In her letter to the heads of state and government of EU-MED 9, the Italian prime minister, and ahead of tomorrow’s meeting in Malta, asked for coherence in dealing with immigrants and refugees.
According to information from the Italian press, Meloni underlined the importance, for the southern countries of the EU, to achieve a “homogeneous attitude, which is characterized by cohesion” in view of tomorrow’s EU-MED countries’ meeting in Malta (in which she will receive Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is also a part) and the informal European Council in Granada – on October 5 and 6 – as well as the Brussels summit, which will take place on October 27 and 28.
The Italian Prime Minister referred again to the fact that immigration is a priority for her country and added that she expects the common approach reached at the summit last February to be implemented soon. In her letter, she also mentions the signing of the EU’s memorandum of understanding with Tunisia and the positive effects of the visit to Lampedusa by the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.
According to information, Georgia Meloni underlined, at the same time, that her government knows that it takes time to implement a multi-level strategy, but considers that the main objective is to remain, the whole issue a European priority, with continuous efforts, which they aim at specific solutions.
The Italian prime minister communicated her letter to the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and to the president of the European Council, Charles Michel.
