Taiwan unveiled its first domestically built submarinein an important step to strengthen the island’s defenses against a possible Chinese attack.

Taiwan has moved on in an ambitious project to modernize its armed forces that includes a domestic submarine construction program at the same time that Beijing conducts almost daily military exercises to assert its sovereignty.

President Tsai Ing-wen, who launched the project when she took office in 2016, unveiled the first of eight new submarines on Thursday in the southern city of Kaohsiung.

“In the past, a home-made submarine was considered impossible… But today, we see before us a submarine designed and built by our country’s people,” Tsai said, adding that it will play an important role in strengthening the navy in whatever concerns “asymmetric warfare capabilities.”

Tsai said the Narwhal will be operational in 2025.
