Traffic was brought to a standstill in central London.
According to the Tower Bridge schedule, the Sailing Barge Adieu was due to cross the river at 1.15pm.
Five minutes before the boat passed the bridge opened and remained in that state due to mechanical failure resulting in massive traffic chaos in both directions.
It caused a lot of congestion around from Tower Bridge and Whitechapel to the north of the Thames and the South Bank and Elephant and Castle to the south.
The problem has been fixed and the bridge is closedi.
