The United Arab Emirates announced Monday that it had intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile fired by Shiite Houthi rebels in Yemen without any casualties.
This is the third attack of its kind in January.
“Anti-aircraft defense forces” intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile fired by the Houthi terrorists at our country, “the UAE Ministry of Defense said in a statement.
He clarified that the wreckage fell in an uninhabited area and there were no casualties.
On January 17, a UAV and rocket attack killed at least three people in Abu Dhabi, one of the federation’s seven emirates; on January 24, two ballistic missiles were intercepted by U.S. forces stationed in the U.S. capital.
The Houthis have dealt several blows against Saudi Arabia, but the January 17 attack on Abu Dhabi was the first to be publicly acknowledged by the UAE as taking place within their own territory.
It was followed by a series of airstrikes by the Arab League that has intervened in the war in Yemen since March 2015 and ground operations by forces of the internationally recognized Yemeni government against the Houthis, who are considered to be close to Iran.
The UAE is a key component of the military alliance under Saudi Arabia. They withdrew their ground troops from Yemen in 2019, but remain an influential factor in the conflict.
