The Russian president Vladimir Putin discussed the situation in Libya and the wider region in a meeting with the commander of the eastern Libyan forces, Khalifa Haftar, in Moscow, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed on Friday.

“Yes, we confirm the fact of such a meeting. Indeed, there was a meeting with Haftar”Peskov told Russia’s RIA news agency late Thursday.

According to the press service of the Libyan National Army, Haftar arrived in Moscow on Tuesdayand met with Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and a number of other senior officials.

For his part, Yunus-Bek Efkurov, Russia’s deputy defense minister, visited eastern Libya twice recently, in August and last week.

What Haftar is asking from Putin

According to media reports Marshal Haftar wants from Putin more Russian military equipmentincluding air defense systems and drones, and expects to open facilities to maintain them in Libya.

Haftar is also said to have asked the Russian president to send Wagner’s fighters to strengthen his army.

Russia, for its part, seeks to gain access to Libyan military ports in Benghazi or Tobruk.

Oil-rich Libya has been plunged into chaos since 2011, when Muammar Gaddafi was toppled after four decades in power.
