But at least 170 of them died trying to escape, from an explosion that occurred at a fuel tank located on the only road connecting the region to Armenia.

Many drivers had stopped at the gas station in the Stepanakert district, one of the few still in operation.

The enclave government also said it “will continue to focus on the situation of citizens who want to move to Armenia.”

Nagorno-Karabakh has been at the center of two wars between Armenia and Azerbaijan, the first in the 1990s and the second in 2020. The independence of the self-proclaimed republic of Nagorno-Karabakh has not been recognized by any UN member state.
