Menendez has pleaded not guilty to bribery charges brought by three New Jersey businessmen and has rejected calls from colleagues and other politicians for him to step down
His criminal trial Democratic Senator Bob Menendez has been set for May 6, federal judge Sidney Stein announced today.
Menendez has pleaded not guilty to bribery charges brought by three New Jersey businessmen and has rejected calls from colleagues and other politicians for him to step down.
Stein set the trial for May, giving prosecutors time to brief the senator’s lawyers on the evidence so they could file legal challenges.
Federal prosecutors accuse the 69-year-old Menendez and his wife of accepting gold bars and hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash in exchange for Menendez’s influence in favor of the Egyptian government and for his interference with law enforcement agencies investigating the businessmen.
The senator’s wife and businessmen Jose Uribe, 56, Fred Dibes, 66, and Wael Hanna, 40, have also pleaded not guilty to all charges.
The indictment includes photos of the gold bars and cash seized from Menendez’s home. Prosecutors say Hanna arranged the meetings between the senator and Egyptian officials, who pressured him to approve military aid to Cairo.
This is the third time Menendez has been investigated by federal authorities, but he has never been convicted. As required by party rules, he resigned as chairman of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee but insists he is innocent.
