Putin may announce that he will run in the March presidential election, Kommersant reported
Russian President Vladimir Putin may next month hint that he will run for president in 2024, according to a report in Kommersant newspaper today, paving the way for the Kremlin chief to remain in power until at least 2030.
At a conference in November, officials expect Putin may announce that he will run in the March presidential election, Kommersant reported, citing unnamed sources close to the presidential administration.
The newspaper, one of Russia’s most authoritative, said that there are, however, other scenarios for what Putin will do at the conference and that the final decision rests with Putin himself. The Kremlin did not immediately comment.
Putin, to whom Boris Yeltsin handed over the presidency on the last day of 1999, has already served as president longer than any other Russian leader since Joseph Stalin, surpassing Leonid Brezhnev’s 18-year tenure.
Putin turns 71 on October 7.
