One person was killed and six were wounded in a shooting incident that happened earlier on Tuesday at an upscale shopping mall in Bangkok, Thailand’s emergency services said, noting that an initial count of three dead was incorrect.

“Initially we talked about three deaths, but in reality only one man lost his life,” Guthana Sretanan, head of the emergency response center, told reporters.

Police confirmed the attacker is a 14-year-old boy who attended a school near the mall. It is still unclear what motivated the attack.

The mall is one of the most popular. It is always crowded and attracts a large number of foreign tourists.

The police arrived at the scene a few minutes after the shooting and were able to disarm the 14-year-old assailant after he had managed to kill one person and injure six others.

Chief Minister Sretha Thavisin expressed concern over the incident. “I am aware of the shooting incident at Siam Paragon and have ordered the police to investigate the matter. I am mainly concerned about public safety,” he wrote on social media X.
