A number of rallies in Downing Street and other government buildings amid a pandemic ban “should not have been allowed to take place,” Ms. Sue Gray concluded in her long-awaited report on partygate in Britain.
In a brief 12-page report he submitted to Prime Minister Boris Johnson this morning, after a long wait, a senior Cabinet official stressed that “some behavior around these rallies is difficult to justify.”
He said he investigated 16 rallies on Downing Street and other government buildings between May 2020 and April 2021, commenting that the country did not seem to take much into account when assessing the appropriateness of the rallies. He speaks of “leadership failures and crises” from various parts of Downing Street and the Cabinet Office.
He also points out and criticizes the excessive consumption of alcohol in government offices, as well as the use of the Downing Street garden for gatherings without clear authorization or supervision.
As expected, however, Ms. Gray does not name people she considers to have behaved in this unjustified way, but generally speaks of “a serious failure to meet not only the high standards expected of those working in the heart of government, but also the standards.” expected from the entire British population at the time. “
Ms Gray points out in the report that the Metropolitan Police asked her to include only a few references to the parties now under police investigation and that this meant that she could not present a “substantial” analysis of the extensive information she had gathered.
It reveals that the Metropolitan Police is investigating 12 of the 16 rallies that occupied it, as events in which criminal acts were potentially committed, which, however, are not expected to incur anything more than a fine.
Meanwhile, strong reactions from the opposition and voices about the Prime Minister’s cover-up and resignation were provoked by the statement of a Downing Street spokesman earlier that the government can not commit at this time that if Ms. Gray submits her full report after the police investigation it will be published as is.
