Germany: 38-year-old wanted on suspicion of killing 2 police officers during poaching

by

Andreas Johannes Smith, 38, is wanted by the Police as the main suspect in the murder of two police officers, who, as part of a regular patrol in Kouzel, Rhineland-Palatinate, tried in the early morning hours to check a vehicle which, as it turned out, was found.

The two police officers, a 24-year-old woman who had not yet graduated from the Police School and a 29-year-old man, stopped the car for search, as reported in their service center, to be heard a little later shouting from the radio , “They shoot us, they shoot us!”.

When reinforcements arrived, the policeman had exhaled, while her colleague left his last breath a little later. The unfortunate police officers were shot in the back of the head. The 24-year-old seems to have been surprised, as she did not even manage to pull out her gun. The 29-year-old policeman had emptied all his bullets, but did not manage to cover himself. They were both wearing bulletproof vests.

Hundreds of police, military police, helicopters and specially trained dogs have been searching for the perpetrator or perpetrators since the morning and have cordoned off the wider area between the Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland. Authorities released a photo of the suspect, a resident of Neukirchen in Hesse, where he maintains a toy store and a bakery, urging citizens to contact the police for any information and warning that he is a “heavily armed” and dangerous person, but he has firearms license. He had previously been involved with the authorities in a case of abandonment of the car accident point. Police also advised residents of the area not to board their car, possibly hitchhiking, and called for a planned rally against the pandemic to be canceled, as “we need all available forces”.

Rhineland-Palatinate Prime Minister Malou Dreier said she was “deeply shocked” by the incident and ordered the state flags to fly at half-mast. Black ribbons have also been placed on all patrol cars in the area. “The act is reminiscent of execution and shows that police officers risk their lives every day for our safety,” said Federal Interior Minister Nancy Fraser.
