Two soldiers were killed and four others were wounded in the bomb attack that took place today in Abyan province of southern Yemen.

A local official, contacted by Xinhua news agency, said the target of the bombing was a military patrol.

The explosive device had been placed on the side of a road and detonated when a military vehicle was passing by. From the powerful explosion, the vehicle was completely destroyed and two soldiers were killed instantly.

So far there has been no claim of responsibility for the bombing.

The authorities estimate that this is the work of jihadists who are close to Al-Qaeda and are used to setting up ambushes against government forces.

In recent months, the number of attacks against security forces has increased in Yemen’s southern provinces as jihadists seek to take advantage of the civil war to consolidate their presence in the country.

Yemen has been mired in civil war since 2014, as Houthi rebels battle the country’s internationally recognized government. A military alliance led by Saudi Arabia intervened in the war in March 2015 in support of government forces.
