Declassified British intelligence documents show London warned of possible Russian attacks against non-warships, with Moscow planning to blame for the strikes the Ukrainian side.

The documents said last month that Russian forces had attempted a missile strike against a commercial cargo ship in the Black Sea.

The British government believes that similar attack attempts could be made again with the use sea mines in the approach corridors to Ukrainian ports.

Commenting on these estimates, British Foreign Secretary James Cleverley said: “Russia’s Pernicious Targeting of Maritime Policy in the Black Sea shows a complete lack of respect by Putin for the lives of civilians and for the needs of this world’s most vulnerable.”

He added that “the world is watching what is happening”, and he has understood Putin’s cynical attempt to blame Ukraine for these strikes.

According to the British government, attacks on merchant ships would also be targeted to hurt the Ukrainian economy.
