The death toll from a drone attack on a military academy in Homs, central Syria, as an officer promotion ceremony was taking place today has risen to 78, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said in its latest interim assessment of the attack.

Among the dead are military personnel and at least nine civilians, including children, according to the Observatory. 140 people were injured in the attack.

“Terrorist organizations” targeted “an officer promotion ceremony at the Homs military academy using drones loaded with explosives immediately after the ceremony ended,” the Syrian military said earlier.

He spoke of many dead, among them “military and civilians” and “dozens of injuries» including officers and members of their families.

The military said it would “respond decisively” to “this cowardly, unprecedented terrorist attack».

There has so far been no claim of responsibility for the attack.

Jihadist organizations that control parts of Syrian territory sometimes use armed drones.
