By posting a video on the X platform, the Italian Minister of Transport and secretary of the Lega, Matteo Salvini, questioned the impartiality of a Sicilian judge who on September 29 ruled the Meloni government’s latest immigration measures unconstitutional.
In more detail, it is the judge of Catania, Yolanda Apostolico, who, by her decision, did not approve the transfer of three immigrants from Tunisia to a closed residence center in Sicily. She justified her decision by adding that the new measures of the Italian government (which provide for the stay of irregular migrants in closed centers until their request for asylum is examined or a mandatory payment of a guarantee of almost 5,000 euros in order to remain free) contradict the Italian and the European legislation.
In the video posted by Salvini, as the press wrote, this particular judge can be seen participating in a demonstration on August 5, 2018, with the main request being the immediate disembarkation in Italy of irregular migrants who had been rescued south of Sicily.
25 agosto 2018, Catania, io ero Vicepremier e Ministro dell’Interno. The extreme left manifests to ask for the disembarkation of immigrants from the ship Diciotti: the crowd shouts “assassins” and “animals” in front of the police.

“I was the interior minister at the time and the far left, on that day, demonstrated demanding that the migrants get off the Dichioti ship immediately,” the League secretary wrote online.
The League asked for the judge’s resignation and when asked about it, Prime Minister Georgia Meloni stated that “it is reasonable to question whether someone who takes part in immigration demonstrations when making decisions on this matter, does so without prejudice”.
The person directly concerned has not yet made a statement, but the president of the Italian Judicial Association, Giuseppe Santalucia, in turn questioned “where this video came from, if it has ever been broadcast on television or if it belongs to the police forces.” From the opposition, the center-left of the Democratic Party and the Five Stars emphasize that “this is a dossier” and that “intimidation methods are being used”.
Finally, the police of Catania denied this evening that the specific video is included in the data contained in its file.
