Israel has decided to temporarily close – due to the war situation with Hamas – a large offshore natural gas field located off Israel’s southern coast.

The offshore Tamar field is located 24 kilometers (14.9 mi) west of Ashkelon, which is north of the Gaza Strip.

“The Israeli Defense Services ordered the temporary suspension of natural gas supplies from the Tamar field,” the energy ministry said in a statement.

The American oil and gas company Chevron, which exploits the field, confirmed the ministry’s announcement.

“The energy needs of the country will be covered by alternative fuels. The electricity industry is preparing to use alternative fuels to power its stations,” he added.

Some of Tamar’s natural gas is also exported to neighboring Jordan and Egypt.
