Gaza has a population of approximately 2.3 million people living in one of the most densely populated areas in the world, which is sandwiched between Israel and Egypt on the shores of the Mediterranean, the strip is about 365 square kilometers (141 square miles).
Since 2007, Israel has maintained strict control over Gaza’s airspace and territorial waters and has restricted the movement of goods and people in and out of Gaza.
After the attack by Hamas, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu threatened to turn Gaza into a “desert island” and warned its residents to “leave now”.
How the Hamas attack took place
On Saturday morning, around 6:30 am. (03:30 GMT), Hamas launched a barrage of rockets into southern Israel with sirens sounding as far as Tel Aviv and Beersheba.
Hamas said it fired 5,000 rockets, while Israel’s military said 2,500.
About an hour later, The group’s fighters invaded Israel in an unprecedented multi-pronged operation by land, air and sea. Hamas fighters entered through breaches in the security fence separating Gaza from Israel.
The surprise attack by Hamas came in response to Israeli settlers storming the Al-Aqsa mosque compound in recent days, but to a record number of Palestinians killed by Israel in recent months.
At 9:45 am (06:45 GMT), explosions were heard in Gaza and at 10 a.m. (0700 GMT) Israel’s military spokesman said the air force was carrying out strikes in Gaza.
Exchanges of fire continued between Israeli forces and Palestinian militants in several areas of southern Israel.
Israeli airstrikes continued late into the night, as did rocket fire into southern Israel.
The densely populated neighborhoods of Gaza
The Gaza Strip includes five regions: North Gaza, Gaza City, Deir el Balah, Khan Younis and Rafah.
Northern Gaza stretches for 10 km (6 miles) and shares Israel’s only pass through Beit Hanun, also known as the Erez Pass.
In Northern Gaza is the Jabalia refugee camp, the largest in the Strip.
Gaza City is the largest and most populous city in the Gaza Strip, with more than 750,000 inhabitants. Rimal, Shujaiya and Tel al-Hawa are among its best-known neighborhoods.
In her heart Rimal neighborhood is the al-Shifa hospital – the largest medical facility in the Gaza Strip.
Deir el-Balah is one of Gaza’s largest agricultural producers. It also hosts four refugee camps: Nuseirat, al-Bureij, al-Maghazi and Deir el-Balah.
Gaza’s only active power station is located along the territory’s border with Gaza City.
Khan Yunis is home to approximately 430,000 people. At its center is the Khan Younis refugee camp, home to around 90,000 people.
Rafah is the southernmost district of Gaza with a population of approximately 275,000. Rapha is also called the crossing with Egypt located in the city.
Both Israel and Egypt have kept their borders largely closed and are responsible for the further deterioration of the already weakened economic and humanitarian situation in the region.
