A woman who made up her dead baby to pretend she was alive has pleaded guilty to murder.
After an 11-month-old boy named Mackenzie Anderson died from a blunt head injury, Tyra Monae Anderson’s mother, 28, took her to a hospital wrapped in a pink blanket, prosecutors said.
Tyra Monae Anderson told prosecutors that her daughter fell out of bed on February 3, 2020, began behaving abnormally the next day and a day later, had difficulty breathing. On the fourth day the child did not seem to respond.
The child was taken to the National Pediatric Medical Center in Washington DC, USA on February 6, where he was found dead. Medical examiners performed an autopsy and found brown debris on towels and sponges.
“A staff member noted that the remains looked like make-up or some kind of cosmetic,” prosecutors said.
Police initially tried to charge the mother with felony murder, through first-degree cruelty to children.
The agreement on the lesser charge of intentional homicide could allow the woman to be released after three years, with the remainder of her 10-year sentence suspended.
“The appeal, which is subject to the approval of the Court, requires a sentence of 10 years imprisonment, suspended for all but three years, provided that Anderson has no future unattended contact with children and that he participates in mental health treatment. . “, The Ministry of Justice stated in a press release.
“After his imprisonment, Anderson will be placed under five years of supervised release.”
Her guilt came after Anderson initially told police the baby had makeup on him because her children were playing with it.
A police report says the baby suffered discoloration of the legs, abrasions on the face, neck and arms and bruises on the face and body.
A doctor at the medical center, Dr. Joanna Cohen said the baby died from a “non-accidental head injury”.
