Two people were killed and six were injured today in the southern part of Hungary, near the border with Serbia, when a car that carrying irregular migrants hit a tree and overturned.

Such as Hungarian police announced, the car, which had French number plates and the was driven by a traffickerdid not stop for traffic control and instead accelerated, shortly before the accident occurred.

Authorities did not say how many migrants were in the car.

The number of irregular migrants crossing into southern Hungary via Serbia, aiming to reach Slovakia or Austria, has increased significantly, according to police figures.

The migrants, mainly from Middle Eastern countries and Afghanistan, arrive via the Balkan route and enter Hungary through Serbia despite an iron fence erected by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in 2015 at the height of Europe’s migration crisis.

Hungary pushes migrants back to Serbia, a country that is not a member of the EU, but they repeatedly try to get over the fence or create holes in it. Many succeed with the help of traffickers who take them further north, mainly to the border with Slovakia.

Slovakia’s caretaker government on Wednesday approved the extension until November 3 of temporary controls it has imposed on its border with Hungary as it tries to tackle a surge in illegal immigration.

The small central European country imposed border controls on October 5 for 10 days, following Poland, the Czech Republic and Austria which had earlier tightened security on their borders with Slovakia.
