NATO’s ‘Steadfast Noon’ exercise takes place every year and lasts about a week. It includes fighter jets capable of carrying nuclear warheads, but does not include actual bombs. Conventional jets and surveillance and resupply aircraft are also commonly involved.
“This is a routine training event that takes place every October,” said Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. “This year, the training will take place over Italy, Croatia and the Mediterranean Sea.”
He said the exercise will help ensure “reliability, effectiveness and security of our nuclear deterrent and sends a clear message that NATO will protect and defend all allies».
Stoltenberg said Russia’s war in Ukraine is a reminder of the important role NATO’s nuclear weapons play in deterring aggression.
Commenting on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s threats to use nuclear weapons, Jens Stoltenberg stressed that NATO is closely monitoring Moscow’s nuclear forces and has seen no change.
