“Israel has been brutally attacked, but a settlement will only be possible through creation of an independent Palestine with East Jerusalem as its capital” noted Putin at the CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) summit.

“It should be the goal of the negotiations the application of the two-state formula of the United Nations, which entails the creation of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, co-existing in peace and security with Israel, which, of course, as we have seen, has been attacked with unprecedented brutality. Of course, he has the right to defend himself. It has the right to ensure its peaceful existence,” Putin said, stressing that “it is vital to work to resolve this issue by peaceful means.”

“The way I see it, in a situation like this and in this particular place, there is simply no alternative (to two independent states),” he concluded.

The Russian president also clarified that the Karabakh region “became irrevocably part of Azerbaijan last year after Armenia recognized that status.”

Putin compared Israel’s siege of Gaza to Nazi siege of Leningrad

Putin also described the Israeli army’s siege of the Gaza Strip as “unacceptable”, comparing it to the Nazi siege of Leningrad during World War II.

According to Putin, Israel is preparing to do something to Gaza “similar to the siege of Leningrad”.

“This is unacceptable. More than two million people live there. Not all of them support Hamas,” the Russian president said at a press conference in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, where he is visiting.
