Thirty-five people, among them nine young Germans, were arrested in Turkey at an event where the attacks of the Turkish army in northern Syria were publicly condemned, an official of the party Die Linke (Die Linke) complained.

The arrests were made during a press conference of the Turkish Green Left Party (YSP), German MP Gyokai Akbulut said via X (formerly Twitter).

The event criticized Turkey’s military operations in Rojava, as the Kurdish separatist-controlled area in northern Syria is known, Ms Akbulut explained.

The Peoples’ Democracy Party (HDP), a Kurdish faction linked to the YSP, confirmed the arrests of nine Germans and 26 other people at the press conference.

The group of young people from Germany, who traveled to Turkey for the YSP youth conference, are reportedly being held in a deportation center in the city of Sanliurfa (southeast), according to reports.

The German Foreign Ministry later confirmed that it had been informed of the arrests. The country’s embassy in Ankara is trying to get in touch with the arrested and is ready to offer them consular assistance, he assured.
