Egyptian authorities do not allow US citizens and citizens of other countries to enter Egypt through the Rafah border crossing on Saturday, insisting that the crossing should also facilitate humanitarian aid to Gaza, CNN reports citing Alqahera News, a local Egyptian news channel.

Earlier, the US State Department sent instructions to Palestinian-Americans in Gaza saying the Rafah border crossing “may be open” on Saturday afternoon.

“We have informed the American citizens in Gaza that we are in contact with that, if they feel it is safe, they may want to move closer to the Rafah crossing,” a State Department spokesman said.

He added that there may not be any timely information in the event that the crossing opens and “it may remain open for a limited period of time.”
