The EU has announced it is launching a “humanitarian airlift” to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza. “Many flights” will depart for Egypt in order to deliver supplies to humanitarian organizations in the Gaza Strip.

The first two flights will take place this week, carrying humanitarian cargo from Unicef, including various items for shelters, medicines and hygiene kits, the Commission said in a statement.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, during a press conference in Tirana on Monday, said:

“Palestinians in Gaza need humanitarian aid, they cannot pay the price of Hamas’s brutality.”

According to von der Leyen, the EU has tripled its humanitarian aid to over €75 million to support civilians in need in Gaza. Funding will be channeled through selected EU humanitarian partners operating on the ground.

Following the horrific terrorist attack by Hamas against Israel and its aftermath, which led to a catastrophic humanitarian situation for the people of Gaza, the EU continues to step up its emergency aid to the Palestinian people, he points out.

This operation through the European Humanitarian Response Capacity will facilitate the delivery of aid to people in need in Gaza. Additional emergency items from these EU stocks are available and ready to be dispatched when requested by humanitarian partners.

Since 2000 EU aid to the Palestinians

The EU has been providing humanitarian aid to Palestinians in need since 2000, supporting vulnerable families affected by emergencies and shocks.

EU humanitarian aid is channeled exclusively through registered humanitarian organisations, including UN agencies, international non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and international organizations such as the Red Cross/Red Crescent family. EU partner organizations are required to follow the highest standards, including strict reporting requirements, and are subject to monitoring and inspection by EU experts.

Furthermore, EU humanitarian aid is always provided on the basis of humanitarian principles: impartiality, neutrality, independence and humanity.
