THE Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg arrested today at Londonat a demonstration organized on the sidelines of an oil summit, an AFP photojournalist reported.

Several hundred climate activists rallied on the first day of the Energy Intelligence Forum, a conference of the most senior executives from oil and gas companies. Among other things, they blocked the entrances to the InterContinental hotel, where the conference is being held.

Thunberg was arrested at noon by two police officers and taken to a police cage. Earlier, the police had announced on Platform X the arrest of five protesters for obstructing traffic.

In the morning, in a press conference she gave, Greta Thunberg complained that “behind closed doors (…) politicians make deals and compromises with the lobbyists of the destructive fossil fuel sector.

TotalEnergies CEO Patrick Pouillané and Shell CEO Wael Chavan are expected to speak at the Energy Intelligence Forum today.

The protesters, to the sound of drums, chanted slogans such as “stop the oil” and “nothing stops us, another world is possible”. Greenpeace activists spread a huge banner across the front of the hotel with the slogan “Oil majors will have to pay”.

“I have six grandchildren, I have nightmares thinking about their future,” said Doro Marden, a 75-year-old London retiree.

Fossil Free London, the NGO that organized the protest, complained that most of the record revenues recorded by oil companies last year were reinvested in the expansion of the fossil fuel industry rather than the green energy “they are supposed to support”.

The head of Saudi Aramco, Amin Nasser, told the conference that new investment is needed to replace “aging” oil facilities.

The protesters also denounced the fact that the president of COP28, the annual UN climate summit to be held from November 30 to December 12 in Dubai, is none other than the chairman of the United Arab Emirates oil company, Sultan al Jaber. “We know that fossil fuel lobbyists have been undermining the COP processes for decades,” Thunberg said before her arrest, arguing that the selection of the COP28 president clearly demonstrated the lack of ambition of those who cannot “lead to a drastic reduction in CO2 emissions”.
