Around 2,000 artefacts have been stolen from the British Museum’s warehouses
London, Thanasis Gavos
The theft of objects from the British Museum’s warehouses it was “inside job”, said the chairman of the trustees of the London institution George Osborne.
Giving evidence before the House of Commons Culture Committee, Mr Osborne commented that “many steps were taken to cover up the thefts” of about 2,000 items.
He added that the crime has become a lesson and revealed that security at the museum has now been strengthened.
In August, the British Museum announced the loss of objects, as well as the dismissal of exhibition curator Peter Higgs, who was blamed for the thefts, mainly of jewelery and semi-precious stones.
The interim director of the museum, Sir Mark Jones, assured that with the enhanced security, such incidents will not be able to happen again.
He also announced the intention to digitize all of the institution’s collections after it was revealed that many objects have not been registered. This is a project that is expected to last five years.
On this Mr Osborne said it was a “complex task”.
