German Foreign Minister Analena Berbock stressed that Hamas bears the ultimate responsibility for the “suffering of the last weeks”
The foreign ministers of France and Germany pointed out on Saturday that although Israel he has a right to self-defense, he also has a responsibility to protect the civilian population of Gaza.
Addressing leaders at the Cairo peace summit, German Foreign Minister Analena Burbock stressed that Hamas bears ultimate responsibility for the “suffering of the last weeks”.
“It was Hamas that brought horrific terror to Israel on October 7 by committing horrific crimes. “Like every other country in the world, Israel has the right to defend itself and protect its people from this terror under international law,” Burbock said, according to CNN.
Burbock warned, however, that this “fight against Hamas must be conducted with the utmost care for the humanitarian situation for the innocent men, women and children in Gaza.”
For her part, French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna also underlined that “nothing justifies terrorism. In the face of terrorism, Israel has the right to defend itself.”
“Israel, in the legal response of the terrorist attack that fell victim, must protect the civilian population in accordance with humanitarian law,” continued the French Foreign Minister.
France “condemns the actions of Hamas” but continues “to supports the rights of the Palestinian people, as we have always done,” Colonna clarified, adding that France will soon send an additional 10 million euros in aid to the Palestinians.
