The head of Germany’s hard-left Die Linke (The Left) parliamentary group, Dietmar Bartz, has confirmed that 10 of his 38 MPs have left the party.

The news follows the official announcement by prominent former Die Linke politician Sarah Wagenknecht that she is launching a new party.

The 10 politicians want to remain members of Die Linke’s parliamentary group in the Bundestag for the time being, the federal parliament, Bartz said.

“Our parliamentary group will decide on this in a sovereign and calm way,” said Bartz, who was speaking in Berlin. He added that the members’ decision to leave is “irresponsible and unacceptable”.

If more than two of Die Linke’s 38 caucus members quit or are expelled, the remaining MPs lose their caucus status.

Wagenknecht announced today that it has formed an alliance with a view to establishing her own party in early 2024.

Members of Die Linke, including co-chair Amira Muhammad Ali, have joined Wagenknecht’s alliance.
