“We rescued two people alive,” who were trapped in an overturned wagon, a Red Crescent volunteer said.
Nazmul Islam, an official of the state-run Bangladesh Railways, told reporters that the freight train violated a signal.
“We have recovered 17 bodies, while more than 100 people have been injured,” a local official, Satiqur Rahman, told Agence France-Presse (AFP). The death toll is expected to rise in the coming hours, as rescuers reported finding lifeless bodies inside the battered railcars.
