“We do not believe that Israel has violated international law,” said Undersecretary of the Interior Robert Jenrick, responsible for immigration.
London, Thanasis Gavos
The British government disagrees with the UN Secretary-General’s assessment that there have been “clear violations of international humanitarian law” in Israel’s response to Hamas attacks.
The position of Antonio Guterres provoked the angry reaction of Israel, which asked for his resignation.
Asked this morning about London’s position, Under-Secretary-General for Migration Robert Jenrick said: “We don’t agree with that (what Mr Guterres said).”
He continued: “If it refers to what has happened in the last two weeks, we do not believe that Israel has violated international law. There is a clear right under international law to self-defense and that is what Israel is doing.”
He added that the British government wants to see Israel “where practical – and it is very difficult to do so – to neutralize and eliminate Hamas”.
Mr Jenrick expressed hope that Israel would succeed in this goal so that “the world becomes a better place”, as “it will be a blessing if we can get rid of Hamas”.
