Washington sends warships and fighter jets to UAE against Houthis

by

The United States has announced the deployment of a warship and fighter jets to help the United Arab Emirates fight the Yemeni rebel Houthis, who are stepping up their attacks on the US-based Gulf state.

The development, which is expected to “help the UAE meet the current threat”, will follow a telephone conversation Tuesday between US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and the de facto leader Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the US embassy in the United Arab Emirates said in a statement, without specifying when.

The UAE is part of a Saudi-led military coalition that has supported the Yemeni government since 2015 in its fight against the Iranian-backed Shiite Houthis.

The USS Cole, based in Bahrain, will reinforce the Emirates Navy and anchor in Abu Dhabi, according to the announcement, which says Washington will also develop fifth-generation fighter jets.

At the same time, in the United Arab Emirates, the Ministry of Defense announced that it intercepted and destroyed “three enemy drones” that entered their airspace, following attacks by Houthi rebels in Yemen in recent weeks.

“The Ministry of Defense announces the interception and destruction, far from residential areas, of three enemy drones that entered the airspace of the Emirates this morning,” it said in a statement posted on Twitter tonight, stating “it is ready to face any threat.” to “take all necessary measures for the protection of the state and its territory”.
