Former Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, 68, has died of sudden cardiac arrest, Chinese state media reported.

“Comrade Li Keqiang, who had been resting in Shanghai for the past few days, suffered a sudden cardiac arrest on October 26 and after intensive efforts (by doctors) to revive him failed (…) ten minutes after midnight on October 27 “, state broadcaster CCTV reported. He added that he would broadcast his extensive obituary later.

The former premier served for a decade under President Xi Jinping, from 2013 until he stepped down as head of his government in March.

The economist, who studied at the prestigious Peking University, was long considered one of the main contenders for the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party, but in recent years he has been increasingly sidelined by President Xi.

In 2020, he caused a sensation when he pointed out that more than 600 million people in China have a monthly income of less than $140, sparking intense debate about the problems of poverty and inequality in the world’s second-largest economy.
